the Crane Wife

Each feather pulled from skin...

As we continue our artsy departure from the strict lines of the 9 panel grid, we bring to you “the Crane Wife” based on the Japanese story detailed below.

As we also mention in today’s strip, “the Crane Wife” is the most recent (though not really new) album from one of our favorite bands here at the Dan & Steve Show, the Decemberists.

...'til threadbare, she grew thin. I am reliably informed that the bulk of the album is inspired by the crane wife story and by William Shakespeare’s “the Tempest.”

If it had a linear narrative, it might have been the best concept album I’d ever heard. Would have beaten “Outside” by David Bowie, which I think is actually his best work.

But I digress.

In the story of the crane wife, the man grows greedy from all the money they make selling clothes. He becomes a hateful man and it is his own fault the he loses his beautiful, generous crane wife. Losing sight of his love and tenderness, he does not see her waning health.

Pretty funny, eh?
